raise the trunk lid. there will be a softball sized plastic panel that pops out in each lower rear corner of the inside of the trunk. near the tailites themselves. pop out this panel, reach in , and unscrew a plastic handnut. it will be right there. get a small screwdriver, or similiar, and gently pry out on the tailight housing between the rear fender/ tailight. be careful, they stick due to dirt, etc. pop it out of the fender, flip it over, and give the plastic socket a 1/4 turn to unlock. the top bulb is the turn signal, the bottom one is the tail/brake bulb. reinstall.

When I do work like this, I take the front seat out so I can lay down to do any work under there because I%26#039;m a tall guy and not as flexible as I used to be.

If your car has the setup where the brake and turn use the same bulb then the signal goes first to the turn signal switch and then to the brake light switch. Since you have a problem with both it%26#039;s just about certain it%26#039;s in the turn signal switch. For changeing either switch it depends on what make, model and year of car you have. Almost all of them are different. Brake light switches are relatively simple to replace. The turn signal switch usually requires removal of the steering wheel and a special tool to remove the plug from the wiring harness. Either buy a repair manual for your car (about $20 at the auto parts store) or check with a local repair facility to see what they%26#039;ll charge to fix it . If it%26#039;s a newer car, with an airbag, I wouldn%26#039;t recommend DIY removal of the steering wheel. Good luck.

I%26#039;m having a problem with my 94 Toyota Corolla: my brake lights don%26#039;t work -- I checked the fuse, it was blown, so I replaced it. As soon as I hit the brakes the fuse blows again before my very eyes. I tried changing the brake light switch under the pedal and it does the same thing so my current switch is good. I took my radio out to make sure there were no bare wires causing a short -- nothing there.





Also, my automatic shift wont move out of park unless I use the emergency release.





Any help would be great! Thanks!|||You have a short in the brake light wiring. DO NOT install a larger amp fuse than called for unless you want to make the situation worse by burning up your wiring. Take it to a good shop. They can locate and fix the problem quickly.|||Check to make sure you have the correct bulbs. Next try using a higher rated fuse increasing in 5AMP increments. Buy a box of multi rated fuses for probably no more then 5 bucks.|||bring it in to an auto electrician or mech.|||well you might be putting the wrong fuse in it, double check to make sure what amperage fuse you need(not what fuse was already in it!) than if it doesnt work get a lerger am fuse and drop in it to see if it still does it, if yoru having trouble putting it into drive and the bigger fuse doesnt fix it, soudn sto me liek a brake switch but i donno|||you have a bad ground some where between the brake lights ant the fuse, have fun hunting it down.......and just so you will know, stop spending money on fuses you have to repair the problem where its at because if you don%26#039;t you will just keep going through fuses.

I need to change a dead bulb on the passenger side of the car, but I%26#039;m a little nervous about accessing that part.





I took out that black panel on the right http://www.familycar.com/roadtests/VolkswagenJetta/Images2005/Trunk.jpg, managed to peel back a little of the felt interior from the rubber that lines the trunk, and undid three of the plastic fasteners that kept the felt in place from the inside.





I can see the panel where I need to change the bulb, but I need to peel the felt back a little more to access it. That%26#039;s where I%26#039;m having a little trouble. I can%26#039;t find any more points to pull back the interior easily and I%26#039;m afraid I%26#039;ll rip something. Is it just necessary at this point to pull it back with all I%26#039;ve got? Anything I need to worry about or is it okay if I kinda manhandle it?|||try pushing on the threaded bolts that you took the fasteners off of...if you have unscrewed all the plastic fasteners, the tail light assembly should push out the back of the car....DON%26#039;T DROP IT. Then you can change the bulb.

The warning light illuminated on my 03 plate vectra to change the brake light bulb. I bought and changed the bulb. The brake light still does not work and the warning light is still illuminated on the dash. Everything has been put back together properly and the fuses have been checked. Any other ideas what it could be?|||check the wireing plug on the rear of the lamp holder...a bad connection can cause this...|||When you replace the bulb the connections on the bulb holder may have a tiny bit of corrosion / oxidation on the contacts. Scrape this area with a screwdriver and retry.


If still does not work test if a voltage is present across the bulb holder - if not test for a voltage on wires leading into bulb holder etc working backwards until a voltage is found.|||HELLO

Help? lol|||Old Clios are a right pain in the @ss to change rear bulbs on. I used to have one, and if I remember right, there%26#039;s a couple of clips at the back of the light cluster (you might need to pull away the carpet in the boot) which allows the entire unit to be taken out from the outside of the car. Then it%26#039;s just a matter of undoing the bayonet-fit bulb and replacing it with another one. It%26#039;s a standard bulb, any motor factor or Halfords will stock them for 拢2-ish each, it%26#039;s worth buying a couple, because they blow all the time on Clios. When you%26#039;re done, the light unit is supposed to just clip back into place, but it can be a fiddle to get it to line up properly, hence the number of old Clios you%26#039;ll see with slightly squinty rear lights!

I am trying to change the brake light bulb of a 1997 Toyota Corolla.I found a nut inside the trunk and two screws on the outside and removed them but the light fixture will not come off. It will only be partially free.|||You DO have to remove the entire fixture on this car.





On my 94 there are two black pegs that stick out from the side area of the car into the trunk. They have another peg that goes into them that causes them to expand outward, holding the fixture in place. If you use a pair of pliers you can usually pull the center peg out which will free the outer peg to slide out of the metal. Do it for both. It DOES take some effort.|||you dont need to remove the taillight itself, there should be a plastic cover inside the trunk that hides the wiring to the bulbs, the socket twists off and then you can pull the bulb out.

I removed the nuts from the 4 screws and I can see it get loose but the screw in the middle seems to have some type of metal ring that I can get off.. Need help ASAP|||Is it a round flat cotter pin? Try pushing it off using a flat nose screwdriver.|||In a 2000 Mustang, the tail light assembly has to be removed from the car to replace the bulb. It is very easy. There should be 3 long brass colored threaded rods with, I believe 7/16 nuts on them. Remove all the nuts and push it straight back, away from the tail light panel. Then just turn the socket and it will be able to be removed from the assembly. Be careful not to handle the bulb with your bare hands as the oils in your skin will shorten the bulbs life.|||Might take a little more pulling pressure. The washers are water seals and they stick pretty good to the metal after a few years. Take a straight screwdriver and gently pry them back. Wiggle the housing up and down and they should start to break loose. Hope this helps.

How do you change 3rd brake light bulb on a 2006 Toyota 4Runner?

I have a 2006 Toyota 4Runner and I can%26#039;t find the owner%26#039;s manual. My 3rd brake light (high mount on trunk) went out. I want to change the bulb but can%26#039;t find any information online. Neither what bulb I need or how to change it. Does any one have the information or a link? If not you open your rear lift gate. Looking into the vehicle from the back if you look up and on the lift gate you should see the long skinny trim piece. That removes and behind there is the twist socket for the bulb. If it does have a spoiler it is most likely an led element and would need to be replaced by a Toyota dealership.

How do you change the brake light bulb in a 1997 Toyota Corolla?

I tried from inside the trunk by taking out the screw, then unscrewed the outside screws, but here are two plugs that won%26#039;t allow me to take out the brake light to change the bulb. Any suggestions?|||You more than likely have to pinch the plastic bulb sockets before you can turn them. Think of a child-proof medicine bottle cap.|||take a screw driver, pop of the plastic plate and take the old light bulb out and put a new one in:)

|||The diagnostic panels in the Q45 usually shows the warnings Stop Lamp Inoperative and Brake Pads worn. This is normal, so don%26#039;t worry about these. If it%26#039;s showing anything else, THEN check out that problem.

|||Not familiar with this car. Check your brake fluid level. If it is low, this will cause a light to come on. If the light is triggered by the computer, a computer scan tool will be needed to shut it off.

How to change brake light on VW Beetle?

OK i%26#039;ve changed the headlights before but i have never done the brake lights. Has anyone that before that can help me out? If you%26#039;ve ever worked on that Beetle you%26#039;ll know that car has had it%26#039;s problems.|||remove the plastic trim panel on the rear of the trunk to access the taillight housing mounting nut. remove the plastic nut securing the taillight housing. pull the taillight housing out and disconnect the electrical connectors. twist the bulb holders counterclockwise to remove them for bulb replacement. the installation is the reverse of removal. this is the instructions for 1998 and up vw beetle.|||owners manual should say.





there should be some screws that release the brake light assembly. you%26#039;ll have to open the trunk to see the screws. after removing that, just pull out the brake light assembly, pull out bulbs, replace bulbs, put assembly back in, and put screws back.

I posted this question before but did not get the answer. I have a 2006 Toyota 4Runner and the 3rd brake light went out. It is on the top part of the trunk door. I do not have the wing, and cannot see anywhere inside the truck where to unscrew the bulb. The only thing I can think of is to pry the plastic cover from outside the truck. I was hoping someone can help me before i break something. Thank you.|||Okay, you%26#039;re on the right track. Under the tail light assembly, there are 5 fitting claws that hold it in place on the outside, you can use a flat head screw driver to pry upwards from underneath the bottom egde, disconnect the power from the tail light assembly, and remove the two screws from the back of the tail light assebly, the bulb twists out. That should do it, if not, let me know and I will try to find what I missed.

I have a 2001 jeep GC and the brake light does not work. My signal lights work and when backing up the light works fine. buy a test light less thain $10 and start probing|||check fuse|||probably the brake light switch.check for power at the switch connector where the wires connect.one should have constant power and the other should not.push the brake pedal and you should have power on both terminals.if not the switch is bad|||If some of the lights work then you probably don%26#039;t need to change the light assembly. My first guess would be a burnt out fuse. Look for the fuse box and remove the cover. Usually on the inside of the cover it will have a diagram for all the fuses and you can find the one for the brake lights. Some vehicles have relays that are fried and these may be under the hood. Just look for a black box which contains electrical relays and other fuses. The last thing I can think of is a switch that is right above the brake pedal. When you apply the brake a small plastic or metal extends and this is what makes your brake light come on.





It is similar to the ones located on the doors of your car. When you open the door, the interior lights come on and when you close the doors the lights go out. Same principle. My husband is having a problem changing the brake light in my 2003 Mitsubish lancer. There is some shield over the light that he can%26#039;t figure out how to get off. Does anyone know who to take this off to get to the light?|||You go into the light fixture from the back, not the front.


He needs to open the trunk and go to the side where the light is.


The carpet and inner paneling is designed to lift away and will expose the back of the light fixture. He has to find the correct light and it should be a simple twist to get the bulb out. He can then unplug and replace it.|||It will be in the owners manual. Usally from the back you turn the bulb from the back and it comes out.|||open boot, lamps are accessed via bulbholders from inside the car.|||I have a 2002 mitsu eclipse and really the way to get it off would be to remove the interior body pannel (check for all screws and attachments with out screws otherwise you can do damage putting it back on... gah i still need to fix that) but remove it from the inside out is the best way.|||You can%26#039;t change a brake light unless it wants to change.

Well if the switch and bulbs are new that leaves fuses and wiring. It%26#039;s easy enough to check the fuses with a 12 volt test light just make sure each fuse has power on both side and then see if you have power to the brake lamp switch and then out of the switch when you press the brake pedal. If you have it to that point see if you have power to the bulbs with the brake pedal pressed if you have that then make sure you have a ground at the bulbs. Beyond that you might want to take it to a shop as tracing bad wiring can be a challenge.|||try changing the fuse as well, if not it might be a dud switch|||check the fuse for the brake lites if the fuse is still good then may i suggest an auto electrician.gl|||Make sure your brake light switch is adjusted correctly, if that%26#039;s ok check the globes again making sure they are the correct type of globe and also make sure the fuse has not blown it would help if you had a test light if all this fails see your auto electrician

There is a panel that needs to be removed, the the wire unclipped, and unplugged from the socket, it can then be lowered down replace the bulb, and replace into scket, and reattach clip.|||it is just a clip ,there is very small gap in the cover,remove it by means of small screw driver

Not too mechanically inclined. Anyone ever change a brake light on a 1995 Camaro (Z28 convertible) and have helpful hints? Like easiest way to get at it and then remove it. Thanks.|||There should be four or five nuts on the back. You can get to them from inside the trunk. you will have to pull back the carpet to get to them. The two closest to the side of the wheel may be a little difficult but you can get them.|||You should be able to get at the lights through the trunk,that%26#039;s where I%26#039;ve found most of them.

my left rear brake light went out on my nissan versa and have no idea of how to change it. any ideas?|||Open the hatch. Pull apart the carpeting behind it. There should be some plastic screws that you turn usually 4 once you get those off you can pull the light assembly from the back of the car and lay it on your back bumper. You can test the lights and have someone tap the brake. From there you should know which bulb to replace. Dont touch the bulb it might blow up in your car later. use a paper towel.
