Why does my "brake" light and my "rear abs" light come on after a hard brake on my 1992 Ford Explorer?

Normal operation after start up; all warning lights operable, but off; and normal brake function. But when I press harder than normal on the brakes, the BRAKE light and the REAR ABS light come on, and they stay on until I turn off the car. This will happen even if I'm not traveling. With the car just sitting idling, if I press the brakes too far, the lights come on. Whenever these lights are on the pedal feels a little spongy towards the bottom of travel (but that could be my paranoia) and takes longer to stop. There is NO fluid leakage anywhere, and the MC is full to the perfect level. All brake parts (pads, rotors, drums, shoes, spring kits) are around 1,000 to 1,500 miles old, and I have always changed them myself (for 10 years on this vehicle) and new front hoses were installed 4 years ago. There are no other issues with the brakes other than this. 222,000 miles and counting. Help? Please?

Low brake fluid?

You have a problem somewhere in the rear circuit of your antilock braking system, if that is the error message you are getting. Have it repaired. When you step hard that activates the ABS which is not working correctly, so you get the light.
OK, after crawling through your brake lines...

How about that good old JSOP valve? If there is air in a line the piston inside the JSOP valve will move and make the brake light come on.

Otherwise, the ABS system is probably bad and you get both warning lights.

You can get a fluid leak inside one of the wheel cylinders and the fluid is still trapped behind the rubber boot and not leaking out just yet.

If you have a front brake hose that is swelling shut you'll notice a pull to one side when braking. There is a rubber hose that connects the rear end steel lines to the steel line that runs from the JSOP rearward.

My money is on the leak that hasn't shown itself in a rear wheel cylinder.

Good Luck!

  • 1971 Mustang Brake light switch problem, won't come on till I'm stopped.?

I recently change my 71 Mustang from manual brakes to power disc brakes. It was a kit, changed everything brake pedal assebly bracket etc, I even changed the brake light switch which attaches to the pedal assembly that triggers the lights to come on when the pedal is pressed. My problem is when I step on the brakes the switch doesn't get actuated until the pedal is all the way down. This only seems to happen while driving. If I'm parked very little pressure will turn on the switch and the brake lights come on. Why would the switch not work when driving and coming to a stop?

1971 Mustang Brake light switch problem, won't come on till I'm stopped.?
That's a weird problem to have...and it baffles me. I have a 73 Mustang. You might want to check your switch and make sure its not loose and maybe moving when your driving (just a wild guess). Id say it has something to do with the electical part of it, so check that too. You might be able to adjust the brake switch itself for a higher sensitivity, but Im not really for sure since its been a couple years since Ive really messed with mine. Only other thing to do is go back through the directions and MAKE SURE you missed nothing...there could have been something you overlooked.
try a different brand switch, they aren't all created equal...

How to change a rear brake light bulb on a ford fiesta?

How to change a rear brake light bulb on a ford fiesta?
There should be a removable panel inside the car where you can access the bulbs. Remove that and you will see the sockets and wires. Grasp the socket of the bulb in question and turn 1/2 turn. That should allow you to pull the socket free to change the bulb which is part number 1157.

I cant seem to figure out how to remove the cover of the brake lights, can anyone please help me out?
How do i change my brake lights on my 2001 Chrysler Voyager?
There should be a screw someplace on the tail-light housing - usually in a 'hidden' typle place. open the rear tail gate and look for screw heads on the side or bottom of the tail-light housing...

remove those screws and the housing should just slide free.

The bulbs and sockets are held in place by the twist-lock structure of the socket. twist it one way to loosen and pull free. Then the bulp just pulls out.

Install the parts back in opposite order or removal.

Just a guess, but if it's like any car I've ever owned you get to it through the trunk.....
Leatherman is correct. You need to find some hidden screws or bolts, and maybe a grommet to push in. They might be hidden behind a panel. You have to check from inside. Then you should be able to take off the assembly and access the bulbs.

How to contest a brake light ticket?

I'm unsure how to contest the ticket.

The brake light is now fixed. I bought the light and changed it, now what?

Show the receipt to the judge? Do i have to go to court? And Do I just show up or do i have to make an apt to do all this?

    I'm confused
How to contest a brake light ticket?
Not sure about the other contributor's jurisdiction but in NV, this is a %26quot;fix-it ticket%26quot;. Once your equipment violation is corrected, stop by the local PD office and have an officer sign stating the violation is fixed. Next go to the courthouse and have them record the new status........problem fixed! If you don't fix it then you risk the chance of another citation and if the officer sees you have been cited for the same thing, off to jail you go.
How to contest a brake light ticket?
Your ticket should tell you the date and time of your court appearance. If not, contact your local traffic court. There will be a reference number on the ticke that they can look up for you. And yes, you will have to go to court if you want to contest the ticket.

Since you were guilty, I would advise that you humbly tell the judge that you are sorry, that you promptly had the brake light fixed, and you would appreciate his understanding. Unless there is more to the story than you've presented here, you won't win on any legal grounds.

    Good luck.
Why would you like to contest the ticket. You seem to be admitting your light was broken. On the other hand, yes there are techniques for your court appearance that will help you get out of the ticket. Admitting that you replaced the brake light might not help in that regard! See the blog spot for detailed advice.

  • I am trying to change a rear right side brake light?

in a 1995 toyota corolla having a hard time removing lens can anyone help?
I am trying to change a rear right side brake light?
you don`t remove the lens, open trunk and move carpet or liner there maybe an access hole where you will see bulb socket turn and remove, if not, there will be a series of 10mm nuts or plastic wing nuts remove them and remove whole tail light as complete assembly, turn socket and pull it out change bulb then reinstall in reverse order
