Brake job and a week later the brake warning light goes out. Why?

Hi, I changed the front brake pads, rotors, sensor and flushed four liters of brake fluid on a friends 2001 740i and the brake light was still on. I told him the brakes are safe and I will figure out the light later. A week later he said the light must have Reset. Did it? What is up with that? I didn't have that happen with my 92 525iT.

The proportioning valve recentered itself after a few brake cycles.

Duty Cycles.

Some codes will reset after a number of cycles without the code coming back up. Cycles being times started, hours run, etc.
the float sensor may have got stuck in the down position that made the light come one and he may have hit a bump and it unstuck itself.....
i really don't know. if i were to guess i would say that the parking brake was partially on and when it was applied and later released the light would go out. sorry.
Yes it can happen. ABS systems have proportioning valves in them. If they are out of %26quot;balance%26quot; the brake warning light comes on. Usually a brake job and or bleeding will 'reset%26quot; them and the light will go off. One may have been hung up or the brakes were not bled completely. Even though you pulled that much fluid through there still may have been some air somewhere.
Vehicles are equipped with a brake proportioning valve, meaning what ever pressure is greater it will push a piston to block the other port. In the event of a rupture in the system, the valve is a safety feature allowing full pressure to be applied either to the front or rear axle, even though there is a break in the system.

A small amount of air was likely trapped in the line. Air will eventually find it's way to the highest point meaning the master cylinder. Once the air has vacated the system the valve recenters itself %26amp; the light will go out.

Man! Are the brakes still working good to bring the auto to a good safe stop every time? The warning light went out on it's own after staying on after the repair job? What IS a 740i? Do you know what it is on that particular auto that activates the brake warning light? For all of the work you stated you did on repairing what you determined to be %26quot;bad%26quot; with the brakes it would seem that you covered everything. The sensor that you listed as having been changed. Was it designed to indicate a low lever of brake fluid in the hydraulic cylinder supply reservoir? Are you sure that you could NOT have allowed an air bubble to remain in the entire hydraulic fluid piping system somewhere nearby that sensor?

If the brake warning light %26quot;reset itself%26quot;, has stayed %26quot;reset%26quot; and the brakes are working perfectly anyway, it MIGHT be that the bulb just flat worked too long and burned out. Oh, NO! I want to believe that whatever caused that light to stay on again after you did all that work, %26quot;got fixed%26quot; on its own, and everything is O.K.! Tell your friend just to be very conscious every time he applies the brakes on his car that HE feels confident that they're working JUST FINE!%26lt;G%26gt;
Yeah, most likely the codes for any repairs you've resolved need a reset. There is a speail device used or you can try disconnect the battery because if you ever need a battery, you will. Hopefully, you retained the owner's manual which should continue to be with the car...for radio code, alarm, etc.
