Why is my 1999 Nissan Sentra's brake light is on in the dash board.?

My Nissan Sentra's brake light is on in the dash board even after releasing the parking brake. There is no change in the braking, No noise and brake paddle is still up instead going inside. I suspect its the problem of low brake fluid. %26quot;Just Brakes%26quot; has give a quote of $150 for checking any leaks, changing brake pads if necessary. Tell me what must be wrong firts of all and is $150 a reasonable quote for brake service.

Your brake light has most likely gone bad. Have a friend stand behind your car as you push the brake pedal. See if the rear lights get brighter.

Many of the bulbs have two different wattages. One for normal driving and then a higher wattage for braking. You won't really notice if the higher wattage part of the bulb burns out, but your car knows.

If the $150.00 includes replacing the pads, yes, that is reasonable.

The light can come on for several reasons. Some of the most common causes are low brake fluid, short in the electrical system, a bad bulb, or an ABS problem. It could also be a main booster problem if you have power brakes.

I would let a technician do an inspection and service for $150.00 with no problem....but I would call the dealer first. This is because if you still have any warranty, the problem MAY be covered. Also, dealers are becoming more competetive on routine maintenence and are not as high as they used to be. In addition, the dealer warrants repairs easier than independent shops and have the latest diagnostic equipment for you specific car.

Good luck and happy motoring!
Brake light could be a sign of brakes wearing out. A 99 should be close to expiration. If there are leaks. Pump the brake pedal and check for liquid near the tires. If you pull on the emergency brake and it goes all the way up pretty easy, it is a good sign that your brakes are needing repair.
All of these answers are good but here is one not listed.

Check the emergency break. If it is on even 1 notch, eather by foot or by lever it will also turn on the break light on the dash
