The hand brake light comes on every time I change gear?

I have a R reg escort 55 diesel van, It seems when I go from 1st to 2nd this hand brake light comes on and goes out?

what could be causing this?

The e-brake cables could be sticking slightly or the handbrake limit switch is set too close to the release threshold. I had the same problem with a '97 Tacoma with a manual transmission. The actuator levers were sticking and the brake light would come on when I hit bumps. Every year when I would get an inspection they would work on this. It never did go away completely.

Faulty switch under the handbrake cowl - common prob on these old buckets
not enough tension on the cable to keep the handle away from the switch, real common, especially if the brake is not used.

good luck

Hi there

If you lift the rubber cover on your handbrake you will see a switch there it has more than likely just worked a bit lose.

Adjust it back in towards the handbrake and tighten the locknut and your done.

Good luck

Why not check brake fluid level? The hand brake light is also a low fluid level warning.
I was just about to say what garfield has already said , check your fluid.
